The Newfoundland has a dense, water resistant double coat that the Royal Kennel Club says needs grooming every day. The breed is described as gentle, docile and patient, and the AKC calls it a nanny dog for kids. It needs up to an hour of exercise a day and a large house and garden rather than apartment living.
